SunCommon solar installation

As some woodsy Vermonters dream of living off-grid, others continue to move in the opposite direction — using solar panels from SunCommon in Waterbury to produce electricity from home.

In doing so, they join a long DIY tradition of Yankee ingenuity, evincing images of isolated log cabins, country lawyers boiling sap, and schoolteachers who make their own soap.

Stephen and Micki Woodruff of Barre Town plan to expand their home power plant beyond 18 solar panels on their house and a solar hot water heater on the garage. Like SunCommon with its fleet of hybrid cars, the Woodruffs plan to go electric with a car they’ll simply charge at home.

“I will be a power producer by the end of the day,” Woodruff said this month as solar installers bolted the last of the panels to the roof, marking the company’s 1,000th home customer. “We are reducing our carbon footprint on this planet.”
