Bill & Janice go solar in Saugerties, NY

“When we decided we were going to use a commercial company, I did research on SunCommon. I wanted a company that I felt good about.”

With a Solar Canopy in the driveway and two Tesla Powerwall batteries in the basement, Bill & Janice are producing more energy than they use on a daily basis and storing it for when they need it. They may even add an Electric Vehicle sometime down the road!

In Conversation…

How did your interest in solar begin?
As a teenager, my dream was to have a house that was totally off the grid, but when I was a kid, that wasn’t economically there.

Why did you choose SunCommon to help make your solar dream a reality?
When we decided we were going to use a commercial company instead of doing it ourselves (which was an option), I did research on SunCommon. Because I don’t know that I trust lots of solar power companies, and, you know, it’s a big project. There are so many things that could go wrong. I wanted a company that I felt good about.

How did you decide on the Solar Canopy?
We were trying to figure out what would work best, and when [I saw] the Canopy, there was really no doubt. It would be functional for us, as well as just a beautiful, almost like a, sculpture on our property.

Note: Solar Canopy availability is currently limited and may not be available in your region.

How’s your solar working out so far?
Well, we have a cloudy day now — it’s producing 1.7 kilowatts, and we’re using 0.7. So we’re generating a kilowatt more than we’re using right now. And I figured out that it’s generating enough power that when we get an EV it will totally support our EV.

And how about your Powerwall system?
We’ll hear a little click in our air conditioner, and we’ll say, “oh, we must be in a blackout.” But that’s the only thing that lets us know — for whatever reason, our air conditioner makes a click. But it doesn’t skip a beat!

What would you say to folks who haven’t yet gone solar?
I think we’re at the point now that it’d be crazy not to have solar. So many people talk about leaving a giant impact on the planet — I’m thinking the opposite way: I want to leave the smallest impact on the planet that I can.

“I chose SunCommon very specifically. I’ve never been around a company that does business the way that we do it. I think the B Corp certification has a lot to do with that.”
