Now and in the future, the solar industry must continually improve, innovate, and develop new technology in order to fight climate change and replace fossil fuels. Solar technology is nothing new. We can date it back to at least 212 BCE when the mathematician Archimedes used a “burning glass” (a lens that concentrates the sun’s rays) as a weapon to incinerate an invading Roman fleet. Even what we consider modern solar technology is older than you might think: the solar photovoltaic effect, which is how solar panels turn light into electricity, was discovered in 1839 by French physicist Edmond Becquerel.
