Energy Storage with
Green Mountain Power

Home energy storage systems can keep your lights on during electrical outages, and Green Mountain Power has two different programs to help customers take advantage of this powerful technology: one where you lease your batteries, and one where you own them. Both programs are currently enrolling new members, and solar is not required for either one.

SunCommon is Vermont’s most experienced installer of home battery systems, and we’ve partnered with GMP to get customers enrolled. Keep reading to learn about both programs, then give us a call to get started!

Option 1: LEASE

Leasing a home energy storage system at a low monthly rate gives you all the benefits of backup power without the need for maintenance.
How it works:
  • Lease two Powerwall 3 batteries for $55 per month OR $5,500 upfront (saves 17% over monthly payments).
  • GMP keeps your batteries charged, ensuring you’ll have enough stored in the event of an outage.
  • Power from your batteries may be shared with the grid during peak demand events.
  • GMP takes care of all maintenance and removes the system at end of lease period.
  • Leased battery systems are not eligible for the federal tax credit.
  • Lease period is 10 years.

Option 2: OWN

With this “Bring Your Own Device” program, you receive an upfront payment in exchange for granting GMP access to your stored power.
How it works:
  • Enroll a battery system you already own, or purchase one specifically for this program, and receive an upfront payment up to $10,500 from GMP. Payment amount depends on how many batteries you enroll and how much power you choose to share.
  • GMP draws power from your batteries during periods of peak demand.
  • You are responsible for maintaining an internet connection and charging batteries.
  • Battery system purchases are eligible for the federal tax credit worth 30% of system cost.
  • Program period is 10 years.

Both programs are currently enrolling new members!

Why is GMP offering these programs to customers?

A network of batteries throughout our communities can help ease periods of high energy demand, and, when paired with solar, stored electricity can replace dirty, expensive energy with clean energy from the sun. With these two innovative programs, GMP will crowd-source power from home batteries when demand is high, helping to bring down costs for all their customers by reducing transmission and capacity expenses. In return, homeowners participating in these programs will get the peace of mind and comfort of automatic, silent back-up power.
