Saving the planet can start with saving money.
Local Solutions, Global Change. Saving the planet can start with saving money.
The global challenges posed by climate change are huge. For many of us, they’re overwhelming. The good news is that the solutions already exist — we have the technology and the know-how to fix it, and Drawdown is showing us the way. It turns out that saving the planet can start with local solutions. Join SunCommon, and join the movement!

What is Drawdown?
The word “drawdown” refers to the point in time when greenhouse gases will start decreasing year-to-year, instead of increasing like they are right now, and the Drawdown movement is a plan to get us there. In 2017, the top 100 most effective ways to reverse climate change were compiled and published in a book edited by Paul Hawken, called “Drawdown—The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming.” It became the year’s #1 selling environmental book.
SunCommon is reading Drawdown to raise awareness and drive collective action over the next few months, to show that together we can tackle climate change—and save money in the process.
Saving the planet can start with you saving money. We can help.
We know that achievable and affordable solutions to climate change exist. Of Drawdown’s top 100 solutions, #8 is solar farms (what we call Community Solar Arrays), and #10 is residential rooftop solar. Both of these solutions save the planet and save you money at the same time. It might not feel like one person going solar makes a difference, but Drawdown reminds us that individual actions really do add up to collective change.
#10 Rooftop Solar
Rooftop solar is spreading as its cost falls, driven by incentives to accelerate growth, economies of scale in manufacturing, and advances in photovoltaic technology.

#8 Community Solar (available in NY only)
Solar farms tap the sun’s virtually unlimited, clean, and free fuel, using large-scale arrays of hundreds (like the ones here in the Northeast), thousands, or in some cases millions of photovoltaic panels.

#42 Solar Heating & Cooling (available in VT only)
Heat pumps transfer heat from a cold space to a hot one. Highly efficient, they can dramatically lower building energy use for heating and cooling.

#77 Energy Storage
Standalone batteries and electric vehicles make it possible to store energy at home or work. They ensure supply event when variable renewables are not producing.
