Here’s What to Look for When You’re Going Solar
Choosing to go solar is a big decision- it’s a big-ticket home project that has a lasting impact on your electric bill and your home’s comfort. So congratulations on taking the first step in opting for your clean energy future!
If you find the next step of choosing a contractor daunting, you’re not alone. Many homeowners don’t know what questions to ask to ensure a good fit for their project’s goals. Fear not- we’re here to help! Here are some things to consider as you embark on your solar project.
There are context clues about the reliability of a solar company.
- Companies that have been operating for 5+ years are statistically more likely to stay in business long enough to honor your warranty.
- Do they employ their own installation crews? In-house workers generally provide more accountable, reliable, and predictable installation quality than hired subcontractors.
Learn about what equipment they use and the warranty they offer.
- Reputable companies offer top-tier equipment. Some brands that we use that fall into this category include Qcell panels and Enphase or SolarEdge inverters.
- Most warranties are provided by the equipment manufacturer and therefore only cover the cost of replacement. Look for a company that also offers a workmanship warranty. We use Solar Insure, a comprehensive 30-year workmanship warranty.
Compare quotes carefully. As with any other significant home improvement project, you’ll want to compare pricing, but also use quotes to evaluate what it will be like to work with the company.
- Get at least 3-4 quotes and ensure they itemize equipment costs, labor, and expected annual solar output. Make sure you understand how much of your electric bill will be covered with your solar install, and don’t forget that your needs may rise in the future if you add an electric vehicle or heat pumps, for example.
- Be wary of salespeople promising deals that “expire today” or quoting prices that seem too good to be true. As a consumer, you should take the time you need to decide what’s best for your home. You’ll be living with your new solar system for a long time to come!
