WALTHAM — (AP) One of Vermont’s residential solar energy companies has launched a new program intended for people who can’t use traditional home solar set-ups.

On Thursday, SunCommon launched its first community solar array that will serve 30 homes in the town of Waltham.

The community solar arrays are designed for homes that do not face south or have trees that block the sunshine. Participants will pay a fee to SunCommon, but it will reduce or eliminate the amount they pay their electric utility.

Darren Springer of the Vermont Department of Public Service says creative projects offer more Vermonters the opportunity to benefit from solar electricity. Over the next two years, SunCommon hopes to build community arrays around the state that will serve 2,000 Vermonters.
